I need a project again
So currently I have some spare time and I don’t want to waste it playing Guild Wars 2 all day long. To make me feel more productive and to learn something new I want to get myself a new project to work on. I’m currently trying to find a field to explore.
The whole web development thing seems to be interesting and is pretty en vogue at the moment. There are so many job profiles asking for experience with JavaScript, HTML5, CSS, PHP and what not and I really understand why. The web is the future and all the fancy things will probably happen online more often than offline. On the other side I really don’t see myself as a frontend developer and I don’t feel like making websites “pretty”, “flashy”, “interactive” and all these other JavaScript scorceries that are going on. (At least not on a serious level. Maybe some hobbyist stuff for my own little website or something but no serious design work. I might be totally wrong on this though.)
I don’t really have a clue about the average-day-work of a backend developer and can’t judge about that. For me, personally, it seems to be the more interesting part though (because it involves realizing the logic behind a website and that’s what I want to do: make awesome software work).
Inspired by my first lecture on computer networks last week I feel like programming my own webserver (in Java) might be something that’s interesting. Maybe I could use my raspberry pi to do something productive there although I don’t have any concrete idea what to do, yet.
I’m kind of lost. I feel like I miss out on many interesting things/fields of applications that I just can’t imagine. Can anyone give me some advice here?
